The College of Social Work launches
The College of Social Work (TCSW) was successfully launched on 3 January 2012. Membership of the new independent organisation for the profession already stands at more than 8,000. This number continues to grow daily as new members enrol to take advantage of a range of services plus an introductory offer of free membership until the end of March 2012.

NHS Future Forum

The Government has accepted the latest recommendations from the NHS Future Forum report. The body carried out conversations with health and social care professionals, patients and service users, as well as providing independent advice on education, training, integrated care and the NHS’s role in the public’s health.

SCIE’s work on integration includes a briefing on Social care and clinical commissioning for people with long-term conditions. More integrated working between the NHS and social care is crucial to achieve good outcomes and make best use of resources.

New SCIE Chief Executive to start in April
Andrea Sutcliffe has been appointed as the new SCIE Chief Executive. Andrea, who is currently the Chief Executive of the Appointments Commission, will join SCIE in April 2012. Andrea is an experienced Chief Executive with a background in both social care in local government and the NHS at national and local levels. SCIE’s Chair, Allan Bowman said "We are delighted with the appointment, Andrea's energy, intelligence and experience will be vital to us as we enter a new stage of SCIE’s development". SCIE’s current Chief Executive, Julie Jones, is retiring following nearly five years at SCIE.

Easing barriers to social care involvement
Service user and carer involvement in social care is essential in improving the planning, development and delivery of care and support. SCIE's breifing on Reimbursements and payments for service user involvement explains how barriers to involvement have been eased for service users and carers who are in receipt of state benefits, supporting them to take part in social care consultations and events.

Service user experience in adult mental health
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has produced guidance which offers evidence-based advice on ensuring a good experience of care for people who use adult NHS mental health services.

SCIE was involved in the development of this guidance as well as the Quality Standard which describes high-quality care for adults using mental health services in the NHS in England.

Consultation on NICE/SCIE dementia guideline
A review is being undertaken to decide whether the joint NICE/SCIE dementia care guideline published in 2006 should be updated. Registered stakeholders for this guideline are invited to comment on the provisional review decision.

NICE Programme Guidance on preventing and reducing domestic violence

NICE are calling for expressions of interest for evidence reviews to support programme guidance on preventing and reducing domestic violence. NICE develops national guidance on the promotion of good health and the prevention and treatment of ill-health. This is a joint referral with SCIE.

NICE are developing guidance for the social services, health services and those they work with on the prevention and reduction of domestic violence between people who are or have been intimate partners, regardless of gender or sexuality.

Request for practice examples for children in public care
C4EO has been commissioned by the Children’s Improvement Board to identify examples of local practice that could be validated in relation to children and young people in the public care system including adoption, permanency planning and fostering.
